Did You Know?

Below is information you probably should know, view the topic and "how it affects you".

Screen Size:
Did you know: Most new computers since 1998 have been shipping with the screen size of 800x600.
Did you know: Most users do not know how to adjust their screens color depth or size (resolution).
Did you know: Most web sites are designed at 800x600 with an average of 16bit color.

How this affects you:
This might explain why some web pages look large and animated even though the average font is 10-12 points in size (used in this article. If you are a power user and have your screen size above 800x600 and the font is too small, don't forget you can adjust the font size overall in your web browser by going to the toolbar and choosing VIEW, then TEXT SIZE. The default setting is MEDIUM. Adjust to your liking.

Site Placement:
Did you know: No one can guarantee your web site to show up in ANY search engine.
Did you know: Meta Tags are not the only thing a search engine looks for.
Did you know: Search Engine algorithms are changed frequently so that no set method can assure you a high placement.

How this affects you:
Search Engines like Google are frequently changing or updating their search software algorithms to prevent people from "hi-jacking" their service by using a set method to obtain high results every time. It is also a business and a way to make money. There are methods which can increase or enhance your chances of listing high, by Father Time is always the elements you can't force and ALWAYS affects your placement in search results. Anyone who says they can guarantee you high search result placement is someone to be weary of. Even if they do obtain a high result for you, it is only temporary. One day your site is on the first page of results, the next day it is no where to be found.

Viruses:
Did you know: Viruses are modified programs on your existing software like Word and Outlook.
Did you know: Viruses spread even if you don't open up the actual email.
Did you know: Most viruses are porn-based.

How this affects you:
Virus scanners like MacAfee and Norton have been around for years, since the days of DOS. The proliferation of the Internet and it's advances have made viruses become more likely of a threat than ever before. Not all viruses are caught but rather mutate much like influenza. Virus authors usually modify other known viruses and put their twist on it. Your best defense may not always be the latest virus definition or even virus scanner itself. In fact, your best defense against viruses is knowing how to handle your email, storage media and Internet Browsing. Such knowledge can minimize the attacks and affects of viruses.

Online Security:
Did you know: The latest version of Windows is the most vulnerable to intrusion (Windows XP and Windows Vista).
Did you know: There are over 65000 ports on your computer for Hackers to exploit.
Did you know: Firewalls and Proxy software cannot stop or prevent all intrusions.
Did you know: If you are connected using Broadband "always on" like Cable Modem and DSL, your computer can be used to attack other computers without you know.

How this affects you:
Not only is your privacy at risk, but the Internet in general is at risk now that many have adapted to high speed connections. When you machine is on, it is always connected to the Internet and can be viewable by other computers, leaving it open for prying eyes. Your computer has ports for send and receiving information, ports that allows you to surf the web, download and get email. The average user only uses 5-7 ports at the most out of the 65000 other ports available. Which gives that many more chances to let hackers come in.

It is commonplace for Hackers to invade your hard disk even while you are online working. At night when you are sleeping, your computer can be made into a "zombie" to obey the Hackers command and attack other computers or entire web sites. It won't be long until the day comes that an attack (better known as a Denial Of Service attack) will bring down the entire Internet bringing businesses to their knees. If enough Hackers united for a full scale attack and gathered enough "zombie" computer to attack major sites and the networks they are on, the Internet will in fact stop due to immense congestion.

Your job is to make your computer as "stealth" as possible. Using proxy or firewall software or hardware is a good start. Also be sure to leave your file and print sharing off when not necessary. Using free programs like ZoneAlarm will also alert you to intruders. This is just the beginning and there is much to learn.
